We've all heard about how child predators use computers and the
Internet to target, groom and solicit kids. The stories you hear and
the reports you see on TV are frightening. What about child predators
using mobile phones? They are connected to the Internet too, but I
haven't heard much about this topic. I bet most parents haven't thought
much about what their kids are doing on their mobile phones. Most of
the teens I know are text messaging, instant messaging and checking
their email on their phones. It's second nature for them and part of
their lifestyle. They use their mobile phones for the same online
activities they do on the computer. That means they can also be exposed
to child predators, cyber bullies and explicit content when using their
mobile phones. Right? This worries me because more often than not, kids
are using their mobile phones when they are not at home or have little
adult supervision. At home at least you can install monitoring software
on the computer and keep it in a centralized place, so you have more
control over who your kids are communicating with and what they are
doing online. But, what can parents do about child predators on cell
phones? Is this a real risk or am I just overreacting?
